Rajarata past student showcases innovative mycoleather products

Research Assistant and former student Mr. Bathya Darmarathne showcased his innovative vegan mycoleather products during a media visit organised by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, Mihintale, on 12 September 2025.

His pioneering creation, titled “Vegan Leather: Composite Mycoleather – A Humane Approach,” offers a sustainable, cruelty-free alternative to conventional animal leather through the use of mycelium-based biomaterials. Mr. Darmarathne explained the development process, material composition and finishing techniques, and outlined potential applications across fashion, upholstery, accessories and industrial design. He emphasised the material’s biodegradability, competitive durability and attractive finish, noting how these properties make mycoleather a promising option for designers and manufacturers seeking greener supply chains.

This achievement highlights the Faculty of Technology’s supportive environment for applied research and student-led innovation, encouraging others to pursue sustainable technological solutions.
