Department of Bioprocess Technology welcomes

Prof. H.K.S. de Zoysa

Professor H. K. S. de Zoysa got promoted to Professor in Biological Sciences

The Faculty of Technology, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, is delighted to announce the promotion of Prof. H. K. S. de Zoysa to the post of Professor in Biological Sciences in the Department of Bioprocess Technology, with effect from 8 May 2025.

Prof. de Zoysa achieved this distinguished academic milestone at the age of 35, becoming one of the youngest professors in Biological Sciences in Sri Lanka and among the youngest academics to attain professorship at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.

A proud alumnus of Rajarata University, he graduated in 2014 with a BSc Special Degree in Applied Biology, earning Second-Class Honours (Upper Division) and the Gold Medal for outstanding academic performance. He subsequently obtained an MPhil in Biochemistry from Rajarata University and an MSc in Marine Biology and Ecology from the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. In 2024, he completed his PhD in Biology at the same university with an Excellent Pass.

Prof. de Zoysa joined Rajarata University in 2016 as a founding academic staff member of the Faculty of Technology. Since then, he has made significant contributions to the development of academic programmes, research laboratories, scientific collaborations and research activities within the Faculty and the Department of Bioprocess Technology.

His multidisciplinary research encompasses biological sciences, marine biotechnology, molecular biology, food safety, fungal biotechnology, aquaculture, environmental biology and bioprocess technology. He has secured nationally and internationally competitive research grants, produced numerous scholarly publications and established research collaborations with leading institutions across Europe, Asia and North America.

This promotion recognises Prof. de Zoysaโ€™s exceptional record of academic excellence, research achievement, scientific leadership, innovation and dedicated service to the University and the wider scientific community.

The Faculty of Technology warmly congratulates Prof. H. K. S. de Zoysa on this remarkable achievement and wishes him continued success in advancing teaching, research and innovation at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.

A Milestone Achievement

The Faculty of Technology was proudly able to secure funding of 6.46 Million Rupees from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology Grant 2026 (Grant No. TG/2026/Tech-D/05), where Prof. Chathuranga Bamunuarachchige serves as the Principle Investigator and Prof. H.K.S. de Zoysa serves as the Co-Investigator.

The project, “Development and Optimization of Vanilla Curing Chambers and Postharvest Handling Techniques to Enhance Vanillin Yield, Shelf-Life, and Process Efficiency,” focuses on developing an innovative, technology-driven vanilla curing system to improve product quality, enhance process efficiency, and support the commercialization of high-quality Sri Lankan vanilla. It has been designed to connect multiple areas of expertise in bioprocess technology, analytical chemistry, materials engineering, with strong emphasis on industry collaboration to develop practical solutions for the agricultural sector.

The research team from the Faculty of Technology welcomed the National Science Foundation (NSF) evaluation team to the Faculty of Technology, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, and had a fruitful discussion on the proposed research, demonstrated the available research facilities, and exchanged ideas on the technological innovations and anticipated outcomes of the project. The grantees extremely value the insights and constructive feedback from the NSF team and are excited to a longterm collaboration between the two parties for the successful implementation of this initiative.

The faculty research team wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for supporting this nationally important initiative, as well as the extensive industrial partnership of AIKYA AGRO (Pvt) Ltd, and everyone who contributed to the development of this proposal.
